Systems
The search for new and improved methods to sample and collect air pollutants is one of the most challenging research problems facing environmental scientists today. To meet these needs, URG has developed several unique air sampling systems including the Ambient Ion Monitor and Ambient Nitrate & Sulfate Systems.

Ambient Ion Monitor Systems
Time-Resolved Particle and Gas Measuring Systems
The 9000 series Ambient Ion Monitor (AIM) provides time-resolved direct measurements of anion particulate nitrate, sulfate, nitrite, phosphate and chloride found in PM-2.5. Nitrite and sulfate aerosols are produced as a result of the interaction of ammonia (NH3), NOX, SO2, and other gaseous constituents. These ions can represent a significant portion of the PM-2.5 and are important in understanding visibility degradation, atmospheric chemistry and inputs into various ecosystems. Other models in the series provide additional Ion Detection of cation particulates, anion gases and ammonia.
Sample Collection
The AIM incorporates several state-of-the-art components for sample collection. It draws air in through a PM-2.5 sharp-cut cyclone at a volumetric-flow controlled rate of 3Lpm to remove the large particles from the air stream. The sample is then drawn through a Liquid Diffusion Denuder where interfacing acid gases are removed. In order to achieve high collection efficiencies, the particle-laden air stream enters the Aerosol Super-Saturation Chamber to enhance particle growth. An Inertial Particle Separator collects these enlarge particles, which are then injected into the Ion Chromatograph. Both particles and gases are collected and injected using syringe pumps, PEEK™ valves, Teflon® tubing and PEEK™ tubing.
The sampler can collect and analyze up to 10 days unattended. This period can be extended, if necessary, by using larger solution reservoirs.
Analysis Method
The analysis method for the AIM is Ion Chromatography from Dionex®. An AIM requires as little as 4 liters of deionized water for 10 sampling days. The detection limit is 0.05µg per cubic meter and can be less depending on which ion is being measured. The Ion Chromatography separates the nitrate and sulfate ions, so that the measurements are not affected by other nitrogen-containing compounds. Losses due to volatilization are eliminated because the particles are collected in a solution and then analyzed by Ion Chromatography.

Products
URG offers a wide array of cyclones, annular denuders, filter packs, and sample media to suit all sampling needs. All products come in uncoated and Teflon® coated varieties and easily integrate with other URG products such as sampling systems and filter holders.
-
Inlets
URG has designed and developed many cyclone inlets for use in air sampling. Cyclones remove particles of a predetermined size from the air stream. Our extensive list of cut points, flow rates and material composition are available to help you with your cyclone inlet needs.
-
Annular Denuders
URG is at the forefront of annular denuder design. The multi-channel configuration provides additional surface area to expand the annular denuder capacity to absorb the gas species of interest. Our annular denuders collect both acidic and basic gases. We provide you with an array of sizes and lengths as well as material composition for all applications.
-
Filter Packs
URG has developed filter packs to ensure sample integrity and allow for easy transportation to and from labs. Our filter packs are unique as the filter media does not come in contact with o-rings. In addition, the filters are supported on a screen that has been coated with Teflon©. This allows uniform particle deposition which is important for trace metal analysis. Our filter packs are available in a variety of sizes and material composition.

Personal Sampling
URG manufactures a wide variety of instruments for indoor and outdoor air sampling. We actively participate in the research and development of instruments for air pollution studies all over the world. Personal Exposure sampling is just one area in which URG has made strides to produce accurate and reliable instruments. One of the most difficult aspects for these studies is correlating ambient concentrations with actual exposure. This creates the need for modular personal sampling monitors that can be used in an everyday setting. Our lightweight and durable portable samplers allow for accurate measurements in an environment where larger samplers would not be practical. Our personal samplers feature size-selective impactor inlets - allowing for selective measurement of respirable particles. Our monitors are available with 1.0, 2.5 and 10μm inlets.

3000N
The URG-3000N is designed to sample for organic and elemental carbon found in ambient PM-2.5. The measurement of ambient carbon species is an important part of the United States national PM-2.5µm Chemical Speciation Network (CSN). The URG-3000N has been designed for the USEPA to achieve comparable data with the carbon measurements of the Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments (IMPROVE) PM-2.5 carbon module.
